CSA #11 (AD) with
a smeared cancel. The stamp is faulty and does not appear to be tied
but may be barely tied at the right. To the left is the very scarce Chic(k)amauga
semi-circular postmark. The stamp does not appear to have been added or
replaced as there is no evidence that another stamp was on the cover.
This semicircular postmark is only known used with a stamp and a three
line date cancel. This may very well be a very late strike with the
woodcut canceller too clogged with ink to be recognizable. From
the well-known Killian Correspondence addressed to Miss Eliza C.
Killian, Killians Mills, Lincoln County NC. Only about a dozen
covers with this iconic postmark are recorded. Cover with a few faults
but still presentable. Ex-Brian Green.
The
entire Eliza C. Killian (1841-1923) correspondence was donated by the
family to the Manuscripts Department of the Library of the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is on file at the library. Eliza
C. Killian received numerous letters during the war from her brother,
John Killian 23rd NC Inf, and others in the Confederate Army. |
