Richard Lloyd Pugh (1837-1885), from a large slave owning Louisiana plantation family, enlisted as a private in "5" Co Louisiana Washington Light Artillery Battalion 5/26/1861. The unit served throughout the war in the Western Theater. Pvt Pugh married Mary Louise Williams (1841-1906) in February 1861. The cover was sent by Pvt Pugh home to his wife who was staying with her father, John Williams (b1820), who was a very wealthy Commssion Merchant in Thibodeaux.
