CSA #7 Horz Pair (margin a little tight at the top) tied by a very heavy strike of the Chattanooga, TENN
CDS 16 JUL 1863. The "TENN" Chattanooga postmark is much scarcer than
the more commonly seen "Ten" postmark. Coarse brown paper cover, which appears to be homemade,
addressed to C. S. Grigsby, Cleveland, Tenn. Very clean cover.
Charles
Scott Grigsby, a 50+ year old Tennessee farmer, had a son, Rush Scott
Grigsby (1843-1934) who served as a private in Co C 1st Ala Cav. At the time of this cover, the unit was in the Chattanooga area. Pvt Grigsby is the likely sender of this cover to his father. |
