TN437 CSA #6 Single Use Prior to the Rate Change (4-Margin with a little edge gum toning) tied by the large single rim Knoxville, Tenn CDS (date not fully apparent 4 --- 1862). Pencil notation on the back "June 3rd 1862" which would be the date of the letter which is no longer present. Addressed to Mrs. Cynthia R. Shouse Care of Mr. George Miller, Talledega, Ala. Routing at the upper left "Via Rome (Ga)" and  "Lt Shouse" (the sender). Also "Eighth Letter" at the top which is a receiving notation. Part of back flap missing and a little light staining, but still a very presentable cover.

Records show a 2nd Lieut Frank M. Shouse (1833-1905) in Co E 31st Ala Inf who was later promoted Capt. The 31st Ala Inf was organized in Talledega, Alabama, and was assigned at this time to the Department of East Tennessee. No further information on the Shouse family.
