TN432 Stampless Soldier's Due cover with the Chattanooga, Ten CDS and handstamp Arc Due 10 Type D 13 JAN (1864) Chattanooga Army of Tennessee "Rover" postmark (CC ATN-01). Coarse brown paper cover addressed to Mrs Mary A. Hitch, Mountain Inn P. Office, Greenville Dist, So. Ca. Endorsed at left "Private Young H. E. Hitch Co I 16th Regt So Ca Vol." Address and endorsment are a bit faded but still legible. Minor edge wear.

Young Henry Elkanah Hitch (1826-1864) enlisted as a private in Co I 16th SC Inf 4/1/1862. Another record states that he had prior service in the 9th SC Reserves and enlisted in the 16th SC Inf 2/13/1863. South Carolina soldiers' records are poor at best. Pvt Hitch was Killed-in-Action while on pickett duty at Kennesaw Mountain 6/19/1864. Pvt Hitch sent this cover home to his wife. Interesting period notation on the inside of the top back flap in the same hand as the address "Mary please write to your husband."
