ATN-01). Orange paper cover addressed to Miss Lillie Marshall Care Capt
G. O. Janney, Montgomery, Ala. Very clean cover. The cover was sent by John Hunt Higley (1830-1889) to his future wife whom he would marry in February 1865. He was promoted Lt Col of the 40th Ala Inf 5/1/1862. He was later promoted Colonel of the regiment. The 40th Ala Inf was a Western Theater Army of Tennessee unit. After the war, Col Higley was engaged in the insurance business in Mobile, Ala. Capt George Oliver Janney (1834-1894) was a CSA staff officer and held the post of Commissary of Subsistence in Montgomery, Alabama. The connection between Capt Janney and Miss Marshall, the addressee, is not known. They may have been related. |
