CSA #5 (decent
color) (margin a little irregular at the right) tied by a nice strike
of the Chattanooga, Ten
CDS 25 JUL 1862. Addressed to Mrs. J. W. A. Sanford Care of Col W. H.
Taylor, Montgomery, Ala. Cover with a sealed back flap opening
tear and just a little top edge wear but is very clean. The 10c Rose
stamp used from Chattanooga is not commonly seen.
The cover was sent by Lt Col John William Augustine Sanford (1825-1913)
home to his
wife. Col Sanford commanded the 3rd
Battalion Hilliard’s Alabama Legion
which had just been organized the month before.
Later in 1863, the unit took part in
the Battle of Chickamauga and the Siege of Chattanooga. Lt Col Sanford
was later promoted Colonel of the 60th
Ala Inf when his unit was
consolidated in November 1863. After the war, Col Sanford served as the
Attorney General of Alabama. Could not find a Col W. A. Taylor from
Alabama associated with the Confederate Army so title most likely
honorary. Col Taylor was Mrs. Sanford's father with whom
she was staying while her husband was away. |
