(margin touches at the left but with a large upper sheet margin) tied
by the Chattanooga, Ten
CDS 4 OCT (1863) Chattanooga
Army of Tennessee "Rover" postmark (CC
ATN-01). Addressed to Mrs. J. W. McLure, Pacolet Mills, Union Dist.,
So. Carolina. Minor foxing and a few back flap opening tears. Very
clean appearance.
John W. McLure (1831-1916), the sender of this cover home to his wife,
entered service as 2nd Lieut Co G 5th
SC Inf on 4/15/1861. His service was with the ANV. He
later assumed duties as a Quartermaster with the Palmetto Sharpshooters
and then at the division level in Longstreet's Corps. His 1916 obituary
states that he was promoted Major but cannot find any verification of
that. He was with the two divisions of Longstreet's Corps that were
transferred temporarily to Tennesee in late 1863 which accounts for
this use of the
Chattanooga "Rover" postmark in October 1863. After the war, he
returned home and was a successful merchant in the Union District of
South Carolina. |
