TN425 Stampless Soldier's Due cover with the Chattanooga, Ten CDS and handstamp Arc Due 10 Type D and also a manuscript "Due 10" 8 DEC (1863) Chattanooga Army of Tennessee "Rover" postmark (CC ATN-01). Light coarse paper cover addressed to Mrs. M. L. Delph, Hamburg, South Carolina. Endorsed at top right "Sergt Delph Co B 66 Geo Regt Vols." Very Fine. Ex-Cate Collection.

R. J. Delph (c1821-1864) entered service as a private in Co F 66th Ga Inf 9/25/1863 and was subsequently promoted Sergt-Major. Listed as a 39 year old clerk in Hamburg SC on the Federal Census of 1860, he was most likely a conscript in 1863 as the 66th Ga Inf was formed in the summer of 1863 mainly from conscripts. Sergt-Major Delph died 8/22/1864. This was during the Siege of Atlanta, but the cause and circumstances of his death are not recorded. Sergt-Major Delph's history with the regiment dates this cover to his wife during the Chattanooga "rover' period in December 1863.
