TN424 Stampless Soldier's DUE cover with the Chattanooga, Ten CDS and handstamp Arc Due 10 Type D 30 AUG (1863) about 2 weeks prior to the fall of Chattanooga to the Union on 9/9/1863. Coarse brown paper cover, which appears to be homemade, addressed to Mrs. J. K. Callaway, Summerfield, Dallas County, Alabama. Endorsed at upper right "Lieut J. K. Callaway, Co K 28th Ala Vols." Cover with minor corner wear, otherwise very clean. Ex-Cate Collection.

Joshua K. Callaway (1834-1863), listed as a school teacher in Summerfield, Ala, on the 1860 Federal Census, entered service as a Lieut in Co K 28th Ala Inf in early 1862. His Civil War correspondence with his wife from April 1862 through November 1863 is extensive (74 letters) and has been published. Lieut Callaway was Killed-in-Action at the Battle of Missionery Ridge near Chattanooga 11/25/1863.
