CSA #12 (AD) (4-Margin
with an opaline sheen) tied by the small double circle Cheraw SC CDS 1 JUN.
Military Address to
Cap Louis G. Young, Care of Cap M. McGehee, Milton, No. Ca. The
envelope is high quailty blue paper stationery with a "PIRIES SATIN"
easily seen watermark. Captain Louis Gourdin Young (1833-1922) served
as a staff officer under General Pettigrew beginning in March 1862 and
subsequently under Generals Pender, Ewell, Kirkland, and
MacRea. He was
wounded in action multiple times - Seven Pines, Gaines Mill, Gettysburg
(3 times), Wilderness (twice), and Hatcher's Run. After the war he was
a cotton exporter in Savannah, Ga. Could find nothing on a Captain M.
McGehee, so assume this was a title not associated with the Confederate
Army. Cover most likely from June 1864 after Captain Young's Wilderness
wound, and he was possibly staying with a relative or friend during
recovery. Minor backflap opening tears, otherwise a Very Fine cover. |
