CSA #16x1 Charleston 5c Blue Provisional (margin a little irregular at the left) tied by the Charleston SC CDS 18 OCT 1861. Orange paper cover addressed to John Snead Esq, Lynchburg, Va. “DUE 5” handstamp applied for underpayment. The “DUE 5” mark is a Lynchburg, Va mark (Type H) applied on arrival. Most likely the cover was overweight as Lynchburg is less than 500 road miles from Charleston. Cover with some edge faults and a corner fault at the lower left and staining more apparent on the back. The cover is still very presentable and shows a scarce underpaid use of the Charleston provisional stamp.
