CSA #2 Paterson Stone Y Horz Pair
(adequate margins and a small clip to the upper right corner) tied by
the Blue Columbia SC
CDS 13 MAR (1863 by period docketing on the reverse). Military Address to Major General
M. Lovell, Confederate House, Jackson, Miss.
Gen Mansfield Lovell (1822-1886) was in command at New Orleans when the
city fell to the Union in April 1862 and was blamed for the loss of the
city. He commanded an Infantry Division at Corinth and Coffeeville
later in 1862 but after Coffeeville was relieved of command and never
given any further assignments during the war. A short biography of the
general is included. The Stone Y stamp itself is extremely scarce as a
multiple. Scott does not catalog a pair on cover. The new CSA Catalog
lists a pair on cover at $2,500.00. The cover is very clean with only a
little minor edge foxing and part of backflap missing. Still an overall
Very Fine appearing cover with a very scarce pair of stamps. |
