USA #26 with a Grid cancel and the
large single rim Charleston
SC “15” CDS 14 MAR 1861 USA Used in CSA South Carolina.
The Charleston postmark with the internal “15” is a pre-war mark used
1857-1860. At the
present time, there are only two recorded examples of this Charleston
postmark used in the Confederate period.
The second is dated 25 MAR 1861 on a Trans-Atlantic cover to France
offered as SC928. Addressed to W. Edw Dick Esq, Sumter So. Ca. Period
docketing at left concerns the original contents “receipt for interest
due on bond...” Clean cover with backflap opening tears and a small
sealed edge tear top center at the top of the CDS. Ex-Calhoun. |
