SC893 CSA #7 Vert Pair affixed sideways (margin close on left and minor faults) tied by a partial strike of the large single rim Charleston SC CDS 3 APR (1863). Adversity Cover made from a very coarse brown paper which appears to be an unused printed and lined account ledger sheet. Addressed to Mrs. W. D. Russell, Augusta, Georgia. The addressee’s husband was Whiteford Doughty Russell and is most likely the sender of the cover. Whiteford D. Russell of Richmond County, Georgia (1839-1864) entered service as a Lieut in Co I 1st Ga Inf 3/18/1861 for one year and then mustered out 3/18/1862 and transferred to the 21st Ga Cav Battalion as Capt of Co A 5/8/1862. On 2/13/1864 he transferred again to Co A 7th Ga Cav where he was promoted Major. He was mortally wounded in action at Trevilian’s Depot (Va) 6/11/1864 and died of his wounds three days later. Cover must date from April 1863 when Capt Russell was in Charleston with his then unit the 21st Ga Cav Battalion. Clean cover. $200.00
