SC771 USA Star Die Charleston SC 3 MAY 1861 USA Used in CSA South Carolina. Addressed to Mr. P(aul) F(rancis) Villepigue, Camden SC. The addressee was the father of CSA Brig-Gen John B. Villepigue (1830-1862), but the address is not in the General’s hand. Gen Villepigue, a West Point graduate, was the Colonel of the 36th Ga Inf prior to his promotion to Brig-Gen in early 1862. He was severely wounded in the defense of Fort McRee in Pensacola and had distinguished service while in command at Fort Pillow and while commanding a brigade at Corinth. Gen Villepigue fell victim to a fever and Died of Disease at Port Hudson, La 11/9/1862. Minor light horizontal crease, otherwise Very Fine. $200.00
