| SC1310 |
CSA #8 (margin a bit irregular at the left center and bottom right and
affixed sideways) tied by a full strike of the smaller single rim
Charleston SC CDS 11 DEC (1863). This particular 29mm Charleston
postmark is a pre-war mark and is seen used in the Confederate period
only very rarely. The standard single rim Charleston
postmark used in the Confederate period is 32mm. Military Address to Major Joseph Abney, 27th Regt SC Vols, James Island SC. James Island was part of the Charleston Harbor defenses, so the cover was treated as a local Drop Letter.
Sealed top back flap opening tears with a small piece added to the top
back flap not visible from the front. Very clean appearing cover with
excellent postal use and a rare Charleston postmark used in the
Confederate period. CSA Certificate 1997 which states that the cover is
a genuine drop letter use but does not mention the scarce Charleston
postmark.
Joseph Abney
(1819-1870) was the first Captain of Co A 22nd SC Inf and
then Colonel of the regiment until he was dropped in May 1862. Later he
was Major of the 1st
Batt SC Sharpshooters and then Major of the 27th SC Inf.
The 27th SC Inf
was assigned to the Charleston Harbor defenses in 1863 transferring to
the ANV in January 1864. That would date this cover to December 1863.
Major Abney was severely wounded at Drewry's Bluff (Va) in May 1864 and
died as a
direct result of his wounds in 1870. |
