Stampless Soldiers DUE cover with the Adams Run SC CDS and manuscript "Due 10" 11 FEB. Endorsed across the top "Soldiers Letter Co F 6th SCC (South Carolina Cavalry)." Addressed to Mrs. Thos Jordan, Winnsboro SC. Wallpaper Adversity Cover with a White and Blue geometric design which displays very well flapped up from the bottom right. Very Fine.
The
letter was sent by Pvt John W. Jordan (1842-1864) home to his mother.
Pvt Jordan from a very well-off South Carolina planter family whose
father was also a carriage maker, enlisted as a private in Co F 6th SC Cav 6/15/1862 and promoted Corporal in 1864. He had prior service in 1861 in Co B 6th SC Inf. He
is listed as captured as a POW at the Battle of Trevilian's Station
(Louisa County, Va.) 6/11/1864 the largest battle with only cavalry
engaged of the war. He was first confined at Fortress Monroe for a
short time and then transferred to the prison at Elmyra NY 7/25/1864.
While a POW, he is listed as "Died of Disease" (Chronic Diarrhea)
9/22/1864 and is buried at the Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira NY.
