CSA #4 Stone 2 Position 9
(margin touches at the top center) tied to cover by a partial strike of
a town CDS not otherwise identified (date not apparent). Addressed to
Miss Eliza R. Di---- (cannot identify the last name with certainty
because of the handwriting), 52 Hasell St., Charleston, So. Ca.
Directive at the lower left in the same handwriting as the address "Care Penny Post." Small but complete lady's type envelope with embossed flower on the back flap. Significant period staining.
The
Charleston Penny Post Service was a private independent service that
would deliver mail from the post office to a street address for an
extra fee. The service was started in 1849. Pre-war the service used
labels. The service continued through the Civil War years, but only a
manuscript notation was used during the war years. The Charleston Penny
Post is described in Rick Calhoun's book Charleston, South Carolina, and the Confederate Postmaster Provisionals. Patricia A. Kaufmann also published an article in the American Stamp Collector & Dealer magazine in May 2023 "Charleston Penny Post Service During the Civil War".
These covers are exceptionally scarce during the Confederate period
with less than 20 covers known per Rick Calhoun's research. This
particular cover was only recently discovered and has no prior
owner provenance. Charleston CSA Penny Post covers are listed in the
CSA Catalog on Page 478 (CC CS-01 for local delivery). |
