Wallpaper Adversity Cover Hand-Carried
outside the postal system to Mrs. Lovenia E. Spigener, St Mathews PO,
South Carolina. At lower left in the same handwriting as the address "Politeness of F. M. Rast"
which would be the name of the person who carried the cover. The cover
is undated but being wallpaper would be during the Civil War years.
Interesting Gray and White wallpaper pattern displayed flapped
over from the right. Top back flap opening tears and a small piece
missing from the top back flap. Still quite a clean and attractive
wallpaper cover.
Glovenia E. Rast Spigener 1827-1894) was
the wife of Rev Daniel Frederick Spigener (1820-1892). The Federal
Census of 1860 lists Daniel F. Spigener as a farmer, not a reverend.
That title must have been later in life. He is also listed as the
postmaster of St Matthews SC 1844-1856.
Mrs. Spigener (maiden name Rast)
was from a large slave-owning South Carolina planter family and
had 8 siblings. One of two of her brothers could have carried the cover
- Francis Marion Rast (1825-1883) or Frederick Mathias Rast (1834-1886)
both of whom served in South Carolina regiments. The names could be
researched further. |
