Stampless
cover "Whippy
Swamp (SC) Augst 2d (1861) Paid 5cts" all
in manuscript. Whippy Swamp SC is listed in the CSA catalog as
unsupported. The Whippy Swamp post office was established in the
Beauford District of South Carolina in 1837 and is also a listed CSA
post office. This
cover is currently believed to be the only remaining cover from the
very obscure Whippy Swamp post office showing Confederate use. Addressed
to Mr. W. R. Harrision, Fort Gaines, Clay County, Ga. Cover with some
light foxing, a minor reduction at the left where opened, and
minor ink erosions. Ex-Richard Murphy Collection.
The
cover is not dated as to year, and there is no enclosure, but must be
1861 for the following reasons -- 1) The Confederate "Paid 5cts" rate
is correct for August 1861 as the cover traveled less than 500 miles.
The rate increased to 10cts on July 1, 1862. 2) Researching
the
addressee confirms the year. William R. Harrison (1837-1898) of Clay
County, Georgia, enlisted in Co C 5th
Geo State Troops 10/16/1861
which is just over 2 months after this cover was posted. He was
discharged 3/13/1862 and later enlisted in Co F 32nd
Geo Inf 8/25/1862.
He served throughout the war surrendering with his unit at Greensboro
NC 4/26/1865. So the address is absolutely correct for August 1861.
There was a time (late 1840's to very early 1850's) when the
US rate was 5cts under 300 miles. This cover cannot be from
that
period as the addressee was a child at that time, and the distance the
cover traveled was more than 300 miles. |
