SC1298 CSA #4 Horz Pair Stone 2 Positions 16-17 (margin just touches at the left and a little tight at the bottom) tied by two strikes of the small double circle RED Camden SC CDS with a third much stronger strike of the same red CDS at the left 8 JUL (1863). Addressed to Capt Louis D. DeSaussure, Charleston, So. Ca. Back flap opening tears but a very clean appearance.

Louis Daniel DeSaussure (1824-1888), a member of a weathy and very prominent Charleston merchant family, was the leading slave auctioneer in Charleston in the years before the war as well as engaged in other businesses such as president of the South Carolina Railroad for a time. The rank of "Captain" was a state rank granted in May 1863 with his appointment as the state Assistant Adjutant General. His brother, General Wilmot Gibbes DeSaussure (1822-1886), was the South Carolina State Adjutant General.
