Daniel DeSaussure (1824-1888), a member of a weathy and very prominent
Charleston merchant family, was the leading slave auctioneer in
Charleston in the years before the war as well as engaged in other
businesses such as president of the South Carolina Railroad for a time.
The rank of "Captain" was a state rank granted in May 1863 with his
appointment as the state Assistant Adjutant General. His brother,
General Wilmot Gibbes DeSaussure (1822-1886), was the South Carolina State
Adjutant General. |
