Turned Advertising Cover -
Cover unfolded for display with the first use with the advertising
displayed on the outside. Bottom back flap missing and a little edge
wear. Still a very clean cover.
First Use - CSA #11c (AD) Greenish-Blue (4-Margin affixed sideways) tied by the Sumter SC CDS 29 DEC (1863). The stamp is affixed over a large Dark
Blue Advertising Scroll for "J. J. Miller, Auction and Commission
Merchant. Macon, Georgia. Particular attention given to the public and
private sale of property of every description." From the
advertising, J. J. Miller very likely sold slaves as well as other
items. Interesting that an Advertising Cover from Macon, Ga., would be
used in Sumter SC as the towns are about 250 miles apart. Military Address to Lieut H. N, Browne, Company K, 23rd Regt SCV (South Carolina Volunteers), Evans Brigade, Charleston SC. Receiving docketing on the back "Jan 1st 1864."
Second Use - CSA #11 (AD) (margin tight on the left affixed sideways) tied by the small double circle Charleston SC CDS dated in late JAN 1864. Addressed to Mrs. H. N. Browne Care L. L. Fraser Esq, Sumter, So. Ca.
Lieut Horatio Nelson Browne (1833-1864) was the adjutant of Co K 23rd SC Inf.
He was killed at the Siege of Petersburg 6/18/1864. At the time of this
cover, the 23rd SC Inf was assigned to the defenses of Charleston
Harbor before transferring to the ANV. This cover between Charleston
and Sumter is between Lieut Browne and his wife Laura Ann Fraser
Browne (1833-1903). Ladson Lawrence Fraser Sr (1804-1889) was Mrs.
Browne's father. Frazer was a very wealthy planter in Sumter County who
owned 50+ slaves. |
