SC1292 Stampless PAID cover with the BLUE Columbia SC CDS 25 JUN and matching handstamp blue PAID Type A (no rate). Oversize envelope with State Imprint at the upper right "State of South Carolina, Adj't & Insp. Gen Office., Official Business." This imprint is currently unlisted in the CSA catalog. Military Address to Brig-Genl Wilmot G. DeSaussure, Comg 4th Brig SCM (South Carolina Militia), Charleston SC. Cover with just a little light staining with a small reattachment of the original right upper corner involving a very small part of the imprint.

Wilmot Gibbes DeSaussure (1822-1886), from a prominent South Carolina family, was a lawyer who was very active in South Carolina politics. He served briefly in 1861 as the South Carolina Secretary of the Treasury until appointed Colonel in the South Carolina Militia and then Brig-Gen South Carolina Militia in August 1861 commanding the 4th Brigade of State Troops. He also served as Adjutant and Inspector General of the South Carolina Militia. All during the war he commanded the 4th Brigade SCM and operated alongside the regular Confederate Army in the defense of the Charleston area. After the war, he remained active in politics and civic affairs in Charleston.

Included with the Imprint cover is a second oversized cover with no postal markings and manuscript "Official Business." Addressed to Lt Col Wilmot G. DeSaussure, Regt Artilery, Charleston SC. Cover very likely carried by a military courier because of the "Official Business" designation and the military address and would date the cover to the summer of 1861 prior to his promotion to Brig-Gen. Very clean appearing cover with top back flap opening tears and a small piece missing from the top back flap. Small opening edge tears at the top left.
