Stampless PAID cover with the small double circle Charleston SC CDS 23 MAR 1863 with handstamp PAID 10 Type G. Addressed to Governor Jno L. Manning, Manchester SC. Blue
paper Adversity Cover made from a printed but unused Court Martial form
for the 1st Regiment S.C.M. (South Carolina Militia) which is undated
but very likely a pre-war unused form. Original bottom back flap
reattached with nearly invisible archival tape and flapped up from the
bottom for display. Very clean cover.
John Laurence (Lawrence)
Manning (1816-1889), from a prominent South Carolina planter family,
was a South Carolina politician who served as the 65th governor of
South Carolina 1852-1854. His father, Richard Irvine Manning
(1789-1836), was the 50th South Carolina governor 1824-1826. |
