SC1290 |
CSA #2 Paterson Stone Y in
an unusual darker blue color (small insignificant pre-affixing left
upper and left lower corner clips.) There is a prominent central
vertical stone scratch which appears to be random as it is catalog
unlisted. The Stone Y stamp is crudely printed anyway. The stamp is
tied by the BLUE Columbia SC CDS with a MAR (1863) date. Addressed to Major General M. Lovell, Confederate House, Jackson, Miss. The
Confederate House was a hotel in Jackson, Miss. Built in 1861, the
Confederate House was destroyed by Sherman in 1863. Very Fine Cover.
Mansfield
Lovell (1822-1884), A West Point graduate who served in the Mexican
War, was appointed a CSA Major-General in Oct 1861. He held the command
in New Orleans when the city fell to the Union in April 1862 and was
largely blamed for the loss of the city. He did ably command a division
at the Second Battle of Corinth in October 1862, but was relieved of
command and accused of incompetence mainly for the loss of New Orleans.
A court of inquiry cleared him of all charges in April 1863, but he
held no further field commands for the rest of the war. After the war,
he worked as a civil engineer in New York City and is buried in the
Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx. |
