SC1277 CSA #2 Paterson (4-Margin with a right sheet margin) tied by the large single rim Charleston SC 186- CDS 17 NOV (1862). Addressed to Miss Elvina G. Willis Care of Jas Blackman Esq, Down Freight Agent, Charleston SC Care of the So. Ca. R. Rd. Co. (South Carolina Railroad Company). Drop Letter significantly overpaid by 8cts. Cover trimmed just a little at the left where opened. Light period ink smudge near the center of the cover which appears to be a period fingerprint. Two very light vertical file folds not affecting the stamp. Exceptionally fine stamp. This stamp used on an Overpaid Drop Letter is not cataloged in either Scott or the new CSA Catalog. Ex-Kerrer, Ex-Kaufmann, Ex-Richard Murphy Collection.

James Blackman (1825-1879) is listed on the Federal Census of 1860 as a Railroad Agent in Charleston. Could not find a family connection between Elvina Willis (1840-1881) whose later married name was Tylee and James Blackman.
