Andrew Baxter Springs (1819-1886) was a wealthy planter in the York
District near Fort Mill SC. Of note is that there is no post
office named Springfield listed in the York District or anywhere else
in South Carolina at this time. "Springfield" was the name of the
Springs plantation. Springs must have been very prominent to have the
cover addressed directly to his plantation instead of to a near-by post
office. |
