Turned Cover --
First Use - CSA #11c (AD) Greenish-Blue (4-Margin)
Pen-Canceled and postal manuscript "Gadsden (SC) Oct 4
(1864)" to the left of the stamp. Addressed to Mr. S. H.
Boineau, Blue House PO, Colleton District, So. Ca.
Second Use - Stampless manuscript "Blue
House So Ca Oct 7 64" and manuscript "Due 10"
all in the same handwriting. There is a light manuscript "Paid
10 SHB"
which matches the handwriting of the address. Addressed to Chs Heyward,
Gadsden P. Off, Richland Dis, So. Ca. Not sure what that means as there
is no endorsement or apparent military use to explain the "Due 10". It
could possibly mean that the original "Due 10" was an error corrected
by SHB which are the initials of the addressee of the first use to Blue
House and the most likely sender of this cover back to Gadsden since
the handwriting matches. Charles
Heyward (1802-1866) was a prominent planter (rice) in the Richland
District. His plantation was known as "Goodwill." Stephen Henry Boineau
(1812-1896) is listed on the Federal Census of 1860 as an "Overseer" in
the Colleton District but later was the overseer at the Heyward
Goodwill Plantation.
Blue House is a very obscure listed post
office in the Colleton District near Charleston and appears in the 1862
list of USA post offices. This cover appears to be the listing cover
for the new Confederate catalog entry for Blue House. There was also a
Blue House Plantation in the same area. Cover opened for display. Very
interesting cover and Very Fine. Ex-Kohn, Ex-Cantey, Ex-Richard Murphy
Collection. |
