SC1273 |
Stampless cover with manuscript postal markings "Beth Eden SC July 26 (1861)" and manuscript "Paid 5".
Very obscure use from the Newberry District. Period receiving docketing
at the left in red "July 25th 1861" which would be the date of the
letter. Military Address to Wm W. Renwick Esq Care Capt Benj Kennedy, 3 Regiment SCV, Manassas, Virginia. Some light staining and bottom back flap missing but still a very presentable cover. Ex-Richard Murphy Collection.
Benjamin William Kennedy (1821-1894) was Captain of Co K 3rd SC Inf.
The regiment was an ANV unit and took part in the major battles
including First Manassas. There is no record of a William W. Renwick
serving in Company K of the 3rd SC Inf or in any other SC
unit. But that would not be unusual due to the very poor South
Carolina military records. Renwick may also have been an unofficial volunteer as the Renwick family was a prominent planter
family in the Newberry District where the company was raised. |
