Stampless cover with manuscript postal markings "Allendale SC Aug 16th 61" and manuscript "Paid 5". Addressed to Rev Iveson L. Brookes, Hamburg SC. Back flap opening tears and a little light staining at the lower left. Still a very presentable cover. Ex-Kohn, Ex-Cantey, Ex-Richard Murphy Collection. Iveson L. Brookes (1795-1865), a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Baptist Minister, was also a very wealthy planter and plantation owner with property acquired through purchase and marriage. He owned many slaves as well. He employed overseers to manage his plantations while he was teaching in various schools and preaching in various Baptist churches. His papers are archived at the University of North Carolina.
