Stampless PAID cover with the Sumter SC CDS 10 DEC (1862) and handstamp PAID 5 Type B. Military Address to Mr. C. M. Furman, Palmetto Guards, Col Kershaws Second Regt So Ca Vol, Richmond, Virginia. Small cover with missing top back flap and some edge and corner staining. Still quite a presentable cover. See SC1257 for a similar cover.
Charles Manning Furman (1840-1934) served as a private in Company I 2nd SC Inf and was later commissioned Lieutenant and promoted Captain with later service in the 16th SC Inf.
After the war, he practiced law in Greenville, South Carolina, and was
a prominent educator at several colleges including Clemson College from
which he retired in 1913. His father was Rev James C. Furman, long
time president of Furman University. His grandfather was Richard
Furman who founded Furman University.

Kershaw mentioned in the address was Joseph Brevard Kershaw
(1822-1894), a lawyer by profession, who entered service as Colonel of
the 2nd SC Inf and
was promoted Brig-Gen 2/13/1862 and Maj-Gen 5/18/1864. Gen Kershaw saw
distinguished service with the 1st Corps ANV throughout the war. He was
captured as a POW at Saylors Creek 4/6/1865 and was not released from
Fort Warren until July 1865. |
