Stampless PAID cover "Lynchburg SC Paid 10" all in manuscript along the left edge but not dated. Adversity
Cover made from a brown lined unused ledger sheet. Military Address to
Lie(u)t K. Kemper, Fort Johnson, James Island, So. Ca. Very Fine, Ex-Kohn, Ex-Kaufmann.
The
addressee, Koscuisko Kemper (1835-1910), a graduate of the University
of Virginia and a lawyer and teacher by profession, entered service as
a private in Co I 1st Battalion SC Light Artillery. He was commissioned 1st Lieut 2/1/1862 and transferred to Co E when the unit became the 1st SC Heavy Artillery.
He served throughout the war and was paroled at Greensboro NC
4/28/1865. The unit was assigned to James Island May-June 1862 which
would date this cover to that time. After the war, he served as the
Superintendent of Public Schools in Alexandria, Virginia. His obituary
in 1910 refers to him as "Captain" but there seems to be no record of
another promotion. |
