SC1256 Stampless Soldiers DUE cover with a partial strike of the large single rim Charleston SC CDS and handstamp (Due) "10" Type K 28 OCT (1863). Endorsed at the top center "J. D. Booker Priv 4th Va." Addressed to Mr. Saml D. Booker, Clarksville, Mecklenburg Co., Va. Minor back flap opening tear, but still quite a clean cover.

Private J. D.Booker Co K 4th Va Heavy Artillery Regt addressed this cover to his father. The 4th Va Heavy Artillery was organized to serve as both an infantry and artillery unit. The regiment was assigned to the defences of Charleston Harbor Sept 1863 - March 1864 which dates this cover to 1863. On 3/8/1864, the unit was reorganized and redesignated as the 34th Va Inf joining the Army of Northern Virginia and taking part in the Siege of Petersburg. Private Booker remains on the roster of the 34th Va Inf, but there is no further record.
