SC1247 USA Star Die with patent lines and the Charleston SC Paid CDS (partial strike) 31 MAY 1861. USA Used in the CSA and the Last Day of the USA Postal Service operating within the CSA. The Charleston Paid postmark was a pre-war device used only very rarely in the early Confederate period and occasionally in 1863. Addressed to Mess LB & AR Bryan, Rutherfordton NC. Period docketting on the back indicates that the cover was received on 15 JUN 1861. Some light edge foxing on the front and a little more foxing on the back only. Sealed corner tear at upper right not affecting anything. Very clean appearing cover with last day USA Used in the CSA postal use. $400.00
