First Use (outside) -- Stampless cover with the Columbia SC CDS 23 and handstamp PAID 10 Type M all in BLUE 23 JUL. "Headquarters,
Conscript Department, Columbia, S. C. Official Business" Semi-Official
imprint (CC WD-CN-11). Military Address to Capt A. J. Broyles,
Enrolling Officer, Greenville S.C. Edge
fault with a small edge piece missing at the top right but not
involving the imprint. Still a very clean appearing cover and
quite presentable.
Second Use (inside) -- Handcarried
outside the postal system to Mrs. S. A. Broyles, Anderson CH SC
"Politeness of Mr. McKinney." Period pencil docketing dates this
use to the end of the war in early April 1865.
Augustus Taliaferro Broyles (1824-1902) from a prominent South Carolina family was commissioned Captain of Co C 4th SC Inf. At
the time of this cover, which was later in the war, he was detailed as
an Enrolling Officer. As a graduate of the South Carolina College, he
was a lawyer of distinction and served several terms in the South
Carolina legislature. He never married. The address of the second
handcarried use was Capt Broyles mother, Sarah Ann (Taliaferro) Broyles
(1803-1888). |
