SC1232 CSA #11 (AD) (margin just in at the botom) tkied by the large single rim Charleston SC CDS 24 SEP 1863. Addressed to Mrs. Chas H. Olmstead Care Miss Jones & May, Savannah, Georgia. Receiving docketing at the top left "Sept 23 1863" refers to the date of the original letter which is no longer with the cover. Commercially made cover with a minor back flap opening tear but very clean. Ex-Bogg.
 
The addressee was the wife of Charles Hart Olmstead (1837-1926), a native of Savannah, who was the Major (later Colonel) of the 1st Ga Inf and in command at Fort Pulaski near Savannah when the fort was surrendered in April 1862. He was held for a few months as a POW before being exchanged in November 1862. At the time of this cover, he was the Colonel of the 1st Ga Inf and his unit was operating on the Georgia and South Carolina coast before joining the Army of Tennessee. The cover is from Colonel Olmstead to his wife and addressed in the Colonel's hand. There are other covers in the same correspondence.
