SC1202 |
CSA #11 (AD) (margin touches at the left and affixed on the reverse to seal the backflap) tied by two partial strikes of the BLUE Columbia SC CDS (date not apparent). On the face of the cover is a manuscript “Due 10.”
Addressed to Mrs. Edmund Ravenel Care of Ravenel & Co, Charleston
SC. There is really no reason for the “Due 10” unless the cover was
overweight. More likely the postal clerk at the destination post office
in Charleston did not notice that the stamp was on the back and
therefore marked the cover as unpaid postage due. Wallpaper
Adversity Cover with a white, cream, and burgundy stylized floral
design displayed flapped up from the lower left corner. Cover shows a little edge foxing and aging at the right, some edge
wear, and a small part of the back flap is missing. But the cover is
still a highly attractive wallpaper cover.
The
Ravenel family was very prominent in Charleston and operated a shipping
business. This cover is most likely from Dr. Edmund Ravenel (1797-1871)
of the Charleston Ravenel family who was a surgeon on the CS Medical
Staff to his wife. |
