SC1198 Two Covers from the well-known Middleton Correspondence --

1st Cover (Blue Paper) - CSA #11a Milky Blue (AD) (margin tight at the right) tied by the BLUE Columbia SC CDS 12 JUN (1863).
2nd Cover (Light Coarse Brown paper) - CSA #12a Milky Blue (AD) (4-Margin) tied by the BLUE Columbia SC CDS 18 JUN (1863).

Both covers addressed in the same hand to Mr. O. H. Middleton Junr, with either Care of Col Rutledge or Col Rutledge's Regiment, Pocotaligo, So. Ca. Both covers are Very Fine. The blue paper cover is Ex-Wiseman, Ex-Kohn, Ex-Powell.

The unit in the address was the 4th SC Cavalry commanded by Col Benjamin Huger Rutledge (1829-1893), a Charleston lawyer who served after the war in the South Carolina legislature. Col Rutledge was the brother-in-law of Oliver Hering Middleton Jr (1845-1864), the son of a wealthy South Carolina planter who beginning in early 1863 was the Colonel's private secretary and assigned to Company K (Charleston Light Dragoons which functioned mostly as an independent company) at age 17 on 1/4/1863. That would date these covers to June 1863 when the regiment was in Pocotaligo. In early 1864, Middleton gave up his position as the Colonel's private secretary and served as a private in Co K. The unit was transferred to the Army of Northern Virginia in the early Spring of 1864. Pvt Oliver H. Middleton Jr was killed in action at Cold Harbor (Va) 5/31/1864. His name is on the Charleston Light Dragoons historical monument along with the other honored dead of the unit. The monument is located in North Charleston SC.
