SC1197 CSA #16x1 5c Blue Charleston Provisional (4-Margin with complete outer frame at top and bottom) tied by the large single rim Charleston SC CDS 28 NOV (1861). Military Address to Private W. Birnie Jr, Palmetto Guard, Gonzales Battalion, Coosahatchie (SC). Back flap opening tears, otherwise Very Fine. Ex-Calhoun.

The Palmetto Guard was a company in the SC Marion Light Artillery unit. Several different South Carolina units used the nickname "Palmetto Guard." William Birnie enlisted as a private 3/11/1861. No further information. William Birnie Sr (1782-1865) was a prominent Charleston merchant. 

General Ambrosio Jose' Gonzales (1818-1893) referenced in the address was a Cuban Revolutionary General before the war and served the CSA as a Colonel and the Chief of Artillery for the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
