The
Palmetto Guard was a company in the SC Marion Light Artillery
unit. Several different South Carolina units used the nickname
"Palmetto Guard." William Birnie enlisted as a private 3/11/1861. No
further information. William Birnie Sr (1782-1865) was a prominent
Charleston merchant.
General Ambrosio Jose' Gonzales
(1818-1893) referenced in the address was a Cuban
Revolutionary General
before the war and served
the CSA as a Colonel and the Chief of Artillery for the
Department of
South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. |
