Stampless
Soldiers Due with
the small single rim Pocotaligo
SC CDS 28 JAN (1864) with handstamp DUE 10 Type D.
Orange paper cover addressed to Mr. I. J. Heath, Girard PO,
Burke County, Ga. Endorsed at upper left “Pri J. V. Heath Co C 32 Ga
Regt.” The
original letter written on lined notebook paper from a soldier son to
his father remains with the cover. The letter is short and just informs
his father that he has arrived and is well. The letter mentions Capt
Phillips and Col Harrison (regimental commander) and closes with
“...send me some stamps by the first letter you must not forget it I
cant get any here.” Cover with minor reduction at the left not
affecting
anything, otherwise Very Fine.
The cover has an inside turned use with no postal markings and is
undated but addressed to O. H. Southworth, County Line, Niagara
C(ounty) NY. Not sure how a CSA private would obtain such a cover to
use while with his unit in early 1864 in South Carolina. There are 40
soldiers named "Southworth" listed in various units of the Union Army
from New York. Perhaps this cover was liberated from one of them before
it could be posted and then refolded and used by Private Heath. That is
only speculation, but no other explanantion for this inside address is
apparent. Cover with minor reduction at the left not affecting
anything, otherwise Very Fine.
Julius
Virgil Heath (1844-1904) enlisted 5/12/1862. He is listed as wounded at
Ocean Pond, Fla (Olustee) 2/20/1864 (about one month after writing this
letter) but rejoined his regiment and surrendered with his unit at
Greensboro NC 4/26/1865.
