SC1194 CSA #1 Stone 1 (not plated) (margin just in at the top) tied by the small double circle Charleston SC CDS 30 NOV 1861. Military Address to Dr. R. Y. Dwight, Palmetto Gds, Gen Gonzales Siege Strain, Pocotaligo SC. Receiving docketing at upper left. One side flap missing, otherwise a very clean appearing cover. Ex-Calhoun.

This cover was the subject of a Confederate Philatelist article in the Sep-Oct 1982 issue "An Unusual Charleston Cover" by Richard Calhoun dealing with the arrival of the first CSA General Issue stamps at the Charleston post office. This cover at the time was believed to be the earliest known use of the CSA #1 stamp from Charleston. That may or may not still be the case. I cannot confirm if that statement is still true 40 years later. A copy of the original article is included with the cover.

Richard Yeadon Dwight (1837-1919) initially served in the ranks as a private and then a lieutenant in Holcombe's Legion and the 1st SC Inf before being appointed Assistant Surgeon in Confederate Service in 1862. Dr. Dwight was an 1856 graduate of the South Carolina Military Academy (The Citadel) in Charleston and saw extensive service throughout the war in various positions including medical and as a line officer. This cover is dated only about a week after Dr. Dwight first entered service as a private.

General Ambrosio Jose' Gonzales (1818-1893) referenced in the address was a Cuban Revolutionary General before the war and served the CSA as a Colonel and the Chief of Artillery for the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. "Siege Train" refers to the artillery defenses of Charleston Harbor.
