SC1190 |
CSA #1 Stone 2 Position 40
(4-Margin but close top and bottom) barely tied by a grid cancel with a
full strike of the Yorkville SC CDS 27 FEB (1862). Coarse brown paper
cover with Military
Address to Lieut
I. D. Witherspoon, Co A, 12th Regmt SCV (South Carolina Volunteers),
Green Pond, Colleton Dist (SC). Part of side back flap
missing on the right where opened. Very clean appearing cover.
Lieut Isaac Donnom Witherspoon (1833-1901) entered service 9/1/1861 as
the 2nd Lieut of Co A 12th
SC Inf.
The regiment joined the ANV in May 1862 as part of Gregg's Brigade,
A.P. Hill's Division. Prior to that, the regiment was assigned to the
Department of South Carolina. From May 1862 on, the 12th SC
Inf took part in all the
major actions of the ANV. However, records of SC soldiers are
notoriously sketchy. So there is no detailed record of Lieut
Witherspoon's activities, but he did survive the war. The 1860 census
shows I. D. Witherspoon as a lawyer in York SC. |
