(4-Margin but a little close on the right) tied by the large single rim
Charleston SC
CDS 9 JAN (1862). Commericially made orange paper cover with embossing
on the back flap. Military
Address to Lieut
I. D. Witherspoon, Company A, 12th Regiment (South Carolina
Volunteers), Camp Pemberton near Pocotaligo SC. Minor
reduction on the right where opened not affecting anything. Very Fine. Lieut Isaac Donnom Witherspoon (1833-1901) entered service 9/1/1861 as the 2nd Lieut of Co A 12th SC Inf. The regiment joined the ANV in May 1862 as part of Gregg's Brigade, A.P. Hill's Division. Prior to that, the regiment was assigned to the Department of South Carolina. From May 1862 on, the 12th SC Inf took part in all the major actions of the ANV. However, records of SC soldiers are notoriously sketchy. So there is no detailed record of Lieut Witherspoon's activities, but he did survive the war. The 1860 census shows I. D. Witherspoon as a lawyer in York SC. |
