Turned Cover -- 1st Use (displayed): CSA #11 (AD) (4-Margin with edge toning at right and a preaffixing right upper corner tear) tied by a bold strike of the Branchville SC balloon CDS 8 OCT (1863) with Military Address to Lt Col William Stokes, Green Pond SC. 2nd Use (refolded inside): CSA #7 Vert Pair (4-Margin and affixed sideways) pen-canceled and manuscript “Green Pond SC 16 NOV 1863”
to the left addressed to Mrs. Eliza J. Stokes, Branchville SC. Very
clean cover. The cover has not been cut for display. Ex-Randy Neil
Exhibit.
William Stokes (1837-1916), a South Carolina planter and lumberman, was the Lieut Col of the 4th SC Cav
at the regiment's organization 12/16/1862. He was assigned the command
at Green Pond 6/15/1863. The two postal uses of this turned cover are
between Col Stokes and his wife. The use from Green Pond would be in
the Colonel's own hand. After the war, he was appointed a Brig-Gen of
the South Carolina State Militia. |
