William Henry Gist (1807-1874) was the pre-war governor of South Carolina 1858-1860 and a leader of the secessionist movement. He was a signer of the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession on 12/20/1860. The address is in the hand of the former governor to his wife and therefore contains his indirect signature. William Henry Gist was a cousin of States Rights Gist, a Confederate General killed while leading a charge at the Battle of Franklin (Tennessee) 11/30/1864, the last major battle fought in the Western Theater.
