John
Julius Pringle Smith (1816-1894), a lawyer and a very successful
planter, was a signer of the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession
12/20/1860. William Dehon (1817-1862) was a Protestant Episcopal
Clergyman and rector of St Phillip's Episcopal Church in Charleston.
Rev Dehon died 12/5/1862. So the second use of this cover was posted to
him 5 days after he died. Pringle Smith and William Dehon were related
by marriage as their wives were both from the well-known Middleton
family of Charleston, and both are buried in St Phillip's Churchyard in
Charleston. |
