SC1175 | Two Stampless covers with the small single rim Williamston SC CDS with the handstamp PAID 5
Type B. Yellow paper cover dated 1 OCT (1861). Course brown paper cover
dated 28 DEC (1861). Both covers have the same Military Address in
slightly different forms -- Private
J. B. O. Barkley, Sullivans Island, Care of Capt J. B. Moore Co L,
Orr's Regiment Rifles SCV, Charleston, South Carolina. The
yellow paper cover shows just a little light soiling and some corner
wear at the right top and bottom. The coarse brown paper cover has a
small repair to the right lower corner. Covers will only be sold as a
pair. Orr's Regiment (also known as Orr's Rifles) was the 1st SC Inf commanded by Col James L. Orr (1822-1873). The regiment was initially assigned to Sullivan's Island (Charleston Harbor) before transferring to the Army of Northern Virginia in June 1862. Company L was known as "The Calhoun Guards." Col Orr resigned in 1862 when he was elected to the Confederate Senate. After the war, he was appointed as the US Minister to Russia. He died in Russia in 1873 and was brought back for burial in Anderson County SC. John Belton ONeal Barkley (1830-1912) enlisted as a private in Co L 1st SC Inf (Orr's Regiment) (date not known) and was later commissioned an officer. He is listed as a Captain and wounded at Second Manassas in August 1862. The Civil War Corresponence of the Barkley family of Anderson County SC is somewhat extensive. No information on Capt James B. Moore. |
