Stampless Soldier's Due 5 cover with the Grahamville SC CDS and manuscript "Due 5" 8 APR (1862). Coarse brown paper cover addressed to M. H. Hubert, Double Wells (Warren County), Ga. Endorsed at top left "Private H. C. Hubert Co B 48 Reg Ga Vols Wm Gibson Col." Minor light foxing, otherwsie Very Fine. Ex-Kaufmann.
Henry Clay Hubert (1842-1930) enlisted as a private in Co B 48th Ga Inf
and served throughout the war. The cover is addressed to Pvt Hubert's
father Matthew Henry Hubert (1814-1888) who was a fairly wealthy
planter in Warren County, Georgia.
William Gibson (1822-1892), an Augusta lawyer and judge, was the Colonel of the 48th Ga Inf
3/4/1862. He is listed as wounded at Malvern Hill (Va) 7/1/1862.
He was wounded a second time at Gettysburg 7/2/1863 and captured as a
POW. Later exchanged in April 1864, he resigned from Confederate
service in November 1864. After the war, he served in the Georgia State
Senate. |
