Stampless Due 5 cover with the "Hardeeville (SC) Feb 6 (1862) Due 5" manuscript postal markings. Early CSA Hardeeville covers are in
manuscript. The Hardeeville postmark did not come into use until later
in 1862. Addressed to Judge Iverson L. Harris, Milledgeville, Georgia. Endorsed across the top "I. L. Harris Jr Assist Surgeon Phillips Legion." Very Fine. Notations on the back by Van Dyke MacBride. Ex-Matz and Hambrecht, Ex-Kaufmann.
Iverson
Louis Harris Jr (1835-1893) was an MD graduate from the Philadelphia
Medical College in 1859. He initially enlisted as a Sergt in Co A Ga
Phillips Legion Cavalry in August 1861 and was officially appointed
Assistant Surgeon in the same unit in April 1862. Apparently he was
aready acting as the Assistant Surgeon at the time of the cover in
February 1862. He was appointed Surgeon of the 59th Ga Inf in June
1862 and served as a Surgeon throughout the war. A detailed listing of
his war service accompanies the cover. After the war, he ractived
medicine in Milledgeville, Georgia.
Iverson Louis Harris Sr
(1805-1876) was a justice of the Georgia Superior Court (1859-1865) and
a justice of the Georgia Supreme Court (1865-1876). At the time of the
Civil War, Milledgeville was the capital city of Georgia. |
